Join the Signpost Star Challenge!
Join our virtual run and help Signpost to support young people with disabilities in West Lothian to meet their full potential and have the same choices and chances as other young people.
To sign up, click here and search for ‘Signpost Star Challenge’ (registration opens 20th May 2018, closes 30 June 2018, and the challenge must be completed by 31 July 2018)
Who can do the ‘Star Challenge’?
The Signpost Star Challenge is open to everyone, whatever your age and ability – anyone can join in! Mums, dads, children, grans and grandpas, athletes and couch potatoes – the Star Challenge is for everyone!
We would especially like to encourage anyone who has not tried a ‘virtual run’ to give it a go – it’s easy, and you can do it at a time and place that suits you. Why not get together with a group of friends and do it together?
How do I do the Challenge?
Simply walk, run, cycle or wheel 2km, 5km, 10km, or even a whole half-marathon (13 miles), send us proof that you have completed the distance, and receive our unique medal in return.
You don’t have to do the distance all in one go, as long as you complete it before 31st July 2018. Just keep a note/take pictures of the distances covered until you have completed the challenge. It’s up to you whether to make it difficult or easy, and we hope that lots of families will ‘give it a go’ as a way of having fun together.
Is the challenge suitable for people with disabilities/ additional support needs?
Yes! We hope that young people, in particular, will be encouraged to ‘have a go’ at one of the shorter distances. Remember, it can be done in stages, and we are happy to accept the word of a parent/carer that the challenge has been completed by a child. You could do a little each week, or each day.
However, participants must consider whether they have any health issues which may be relevant, and take advice from a health professional about taking part if they are in any doubt.
I’m not in the UK – can I still enter?
Yes! Our registration system accepts bookings from any country. We would love to welcome some international supporters!
Proof of completion
Send your picture, link or other proof to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Star Challenge’ in the subject line, by 31 July 2018.
There are lots of ways to prove to us that you have completed the Challenge. If you have a fitness tracker such as a Fitbit, Garmin or Apple tracker, just take a picture of the read-out(s) showing the distance covered, and email them to us at email@example.com.
You might also want to register for Parkrun, who will automatically send you an email showing your time for completing 5km. Parkrun is a free event which takes place every Saturday morning at 9.30am.
There are Parkruns all over the place – our local one starts from Livingston Civic Centre (leave your car at the football stadium) and follows the river paths nearby. Walkers, runners and push-chairs are all welcome, though note that there are a few rougher patches on the paths through the woods. Sign up at least 24 hours before an event, and don’t forget to bring your barcode!
Parent/carers can simply send us an email to confirm that their child has completed the Challenge.
Is there a cost?
Entries to the Star Challenge cost £12 for adults, and £7 for children (under 16 at time of registration), with at least 85% of fees being donated to Signpost to support its work with families of young people with additional support needs. There will be an additional booking fee of up to £1 per registration – this is added by the company handling the registrations.
You do not have to be sponsored to take part in the Challenge. However, please consider raising funds for Signpost to help us with our important work of supporting families of young people with additional support needs to have the same choices and opportunities as any other family, without the disability getting in the way. Every penny helps, there is no minimum sponsorship amount.
It’s easy to set up a FREE JustGiving page to collect donations – click here to get started – or if you prefer you can contact us to receive a sponsorship form by calling 01506 431123, or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
